Dr. Richard Horowitz
If there is roughly a 15% rate of Lyme disease worldwide, how likely is it in 2019 that only 3000-4000 NY residents got it? Even multiplying the figure by 10x, which is what the CDC does to estimate cases, it seems to me that the number is much higher.
Take a look at the number of increasing CFS/ME, Fibromyalgia, non-specific autoimmune diseases and disability cases in NY. How many individuals are actually disabled in NYS?
"In New York State, about one in five of the adult,
non-institutionalized population (about 3 million people)
report an activity limitation." That number is 22.5%. According to the CDC, 25% of Americans live with a disability. What are the primary causes?
"The three most common causes of disability continued to be arthritis or rheumatism (affecting an estimated 8.6 million persons), back or spine problems (7.6 million), and heart trouble (3.0 million). May 1, 2009
Could Lyme disease, therefore, be a contributing factor in arthritis, rheumatism, and back problems? Certainly. Heart trouble? Possibly. Is it perhaps time to send out a questionnaire to every disabled individual in NYS and in the US and find out how many remember tick bites, have been tested for Lyme, and/or have migratory pain, the hallmark symptom of acute and chronic LD?
We validated our HMQ Lyme questionnaire years ago. Why not use it on a statewide or national basis to determine the pre-test probability of Lyme and helping some of these individuals to get off disability?
