As a biofilm begins to form, the Borrelia spirochete will secrete a glyco-protein gel. This attracts other Borrelia and the spirochetes merge their secretions. Soon a 3D mass of bacteria forms with bacteria in the center and throughout the gel-film. Biofilms may be a natural state in the brains of chronic neuroborreliosis patients. This is supported by more than 100 Alzheimer brain samples stained with DNA Beacon Probes for three different Borrelia species by Dr Alan MacDonald.
