I heard of a patient in Winnipeg, Manitoba with severe deteriorating symptoms after a tick bite and this was from what I was told associated with a marked leukopenia. The most obvious diagnosis would be Ehrlichiosis since this disease has a very high mortality rate and is a common co-infection of Lyme disease associated with a low white cell count.. But our medical schools are not teaching about the common vector borne diseases and this patient may have died unnecessarily .
There is a possibility that if the diagnosis was established early and treated appropriately death may have been prevented. I was asked to give a talk at a Naturopathic Conference about the evidence based antibiotic treatment of Lyme disease and co-infections including symptomology. This has lead to the education at the Boucher Institute regularly in the past five years specifically about this vector borne epidemic with all the common antibiotics.
Education is urgently needed in all the medical schools since the Lyme epidemic is already bordering on a pandemic status. The "Medical Divide" and the "fear factor" which persists in our profession represents the major obstacle in establishing a proper educational program Dr. Ernie Murakami M.D. Clinical Associate Professor Emeritus, UBC.
