WHY DID SO MANY WITH LYME DISEASE CHOOSE SUICIDE
Warning: Very sensitive content. Proceed with caution.
My final post on Lyme Awareness for the last day in May is the rawest one yet.
The number one killer of those with Lyme disease is SUICIDE.
Imagine being trapped at the top of a burning building. You scream to the top of your lungs for help but no one answers you.
No one is coming to your rescue. You see the flames and you feel the heat of the fire and you know it's just a matter of time before you will be overcome. Do you stay and suffer the pain of smoke inhalation or do you jump? All the while the people in the street are calling you negative. Of course, you are negative, from your point of view, all there is is pain with no hope for an end.
This is life with chronic Lyme disease. We are trapped in our own bodies in a world of pain from which there is no escape. When people who are suffering are called “negative’ it's the same as saying “jump”.
Those who choose death over suffering fought long and hard until they could not fight anymore. They fought the disease destroying their bodies, they fought families and friends who didn’t offer compassion or understanding when they couldn’t attend important events like graduations or parties.
They fought a healthcare system that was against them from day one. And arrogant condescending doctors who met their pleas for help with stone-cold silence. Imagine going into battle with no protection and no reinforcements.
Nothing to shield them from the harsh blows they endured day in and day out. But every day they got up for the ones they love they took hit after hit and blow after crushing blow.
They fought until their bodies and their broken hearts couldn’t take anymore. If you knew what they were up against, if you could actually see the ugly giant they fought you would understand how brave they truly were.
But some refused to see, they refused to care, they refused to listen. So since no doctor would help, they put themselves out of their misery. They jumped. This is in honor of those who bravely fought with courage and dignity and an invisible, impossible fight till the end.
So the next time someone comes to you needing encouragement instead of calling them “negative” how about offering a prayer instead. Offer a kind word even if it’s something you don’t really accept or understand.
You just might save them from that burning building.
