How Denial of the Disease takes over...
(Help someone you love- please share)
Most men won’t recognize signs after the initial incubation and beyond. They may rebound but find that they can’t play sports, go to the gym or just take long walks.
They blame it on age, old sports, or work injuries...
They don’t want to complain. They just wanna be one of the guys. As time goes on...
He’s taking more over-the-counter anti-inflammatories...
wearing knee braces, elbow wraps, and compression underclothes.
(He’s got this- no need to complain)
He may have ringing in the ears at low levels, ED, constant sinus infections, rib pain, increased cholesterol, floaters in his eyes, low testosterone, interstitial cystitis, gut problems, etc. Slowly the neurological signs start drifting in He can’t remember things, finds himself moodier than usual, and eventually starts to self-medicate with alcohol or more as he doesn’t understand why things are creeping up on him and he just doesn’t feel like himself physically or emotionally anymore.
By the time he gives into a three to five-year decline in his overall health and goes to his Doctor-he gets told it’s arthritis, gout, bad diet, stress, and anxiety...By now he needs carpal tunnel surgery, and more due to the constant inflammation in his joints and tearing ligaments/tendons...
The whole time he’s been making fun of the guy that ended up disabled from Lyme Disease that he used to hunt with saying; “Some of us have stronger immune systems.”
“Just work through it...” “I was tested - it came back negative. He’s got the same symptoms I have- it’s just a part of life.” One day- that coworker is finally healthy enough to work full-time again after two years of treatment. He’s back in the gym. Hunting. Fishing and mowing the neighbor's yard like he used to. As time goes on - he starts to listen to the one he called; “the whimper that just wants attention”...
He had refused to listen before, but now it all makes sense, and comes to realize - he’s now so far into this battle he may never recover.
All because he wanted to be a tough guy.
